This summer we were invited to four weddings. Our friends have children that are getting married and our son and daughter have friends that are getting married. In addition to being invited to the weddings I was also invited to the bridal showers for each of them.  Each of the couples was registered at various bridal registries. We decided that for the wedding gifts for each of the couples we would give a similar priced item from the registry, but for the shower gifts I wanted to find something that would be fun for the couples.

I went to one of my favorite import stores to see if I could come up with an idea. I looked at several things and then I noticed that they had picnic baskets. I thought that this would be a fun gift to give that could be personalized to the likes of each couple. The basic picnic baskets had two wine glasses, two plates and silverware. Also included was a table cloth and napkins. These items were neatly packed in the top of each of the picnic baskets. This left room in the bottom of the baskets to place food items. There were packs included that could be placed in the microwave to keep food warm and also packs that could be frozen to keep foods cool. My mother lives in a senior apartment building. She moved there when she was no longer able to mange the upkeep of her yard and home. She enjoys the many activities that the apartment complex offers each week. She has always been a very social person and has made many new friends in the building, as well as maintaining friendships from the former neighborhood. My mother has always enjoyed giving gifts during the holiday season. As she and her friends have aged it is harder for her to come up with ideas to give to her friends. She enjoys baking so she gives holiday cookies to some people, but many of her elderly friends are diabetic. This year she decided to give out a nut gift basket. Recently, my wife gave birth to a lovely and perfect little angel baby girl. I can not say enough of her. She has these wide curious eyes, these little adorable hands, and this really light, thin, and pale hair on her adorable head. Best of all, she never nags for anything or asks for the car keys. I hope that she never changes or grows up even a little bit. She is just so infernally perfect as she is, that I could not bare to see her in the least bit different. If she grows even a foot taller, it will ruin everything, but I know that she will be a good girl and stay perfectly the same.

When I picked out my birth announcements, I certainly needed to take my time. I am picky in all things, especially important ones. Before our current era of email and telephones, the humble letter was the only way to communicate over long distances.  We now give the letter a certain amount of romanticism since it represents a bygone era.  However, in the past few years we’ve seen a slight renaissance in letter writing; stationary stores and specialty papermakers have reported that they’ve seen more people interested in designer papers and wax seals than they’ve seen in years.  It’s tough to completely revive letter writing though, since after all, writing an email or dialing up someone on the phone takes a lot less time than it takes to sit down and write a letter.
